Divali (or Deepawali) 2024 approaches, with celebrations occurring on Thursday 31st October in T&T. It is a popular day here, the entire country enjoying a public holiday & festivities.
A fusion of several spiritual activities, it primarily focuses on the removal of darkness from our lives.
One of the primary tenets of Hinduism is that we are all connected to other beings & the universe. We all have that spark of divinity within us.
As humans it is our responsibility to care for & protect others around us, especially those that can’t do so for themselves.
While we all enjoy the lights & festivities, the primary message of love for all should not be lost.
During Divali celebrations, loud sounds are one of the biggest causes of animal harm, injury & death.
As fun as fireworks & bursting bamboo may be, the blasts create tremendous distress to all animals, babies, the elderly & those with serious medical conditions.
It is well known that many animals have a sense of hearing far superior to humans.
Booming sounds trigger a fight or flight response in them, resulting in their running away, getting lost, injured or dying. They also suffer from severe panic with trembling, seizures & death.
How many of us have seen the bodies of dogs & cats strewn about on our roadways especially after holidays like this?
How many of you have had pets suffer extreme panic or go missing after trying to run away from these loud sounds?
The Animals Alive team is very anxious about the upcoming days.
This time of year is never a fun time at the shelter.
The blasts & loud sounds during Divali celebrations cause tremendous distress to the hundreds of dogs & cats under our care.
Because we can’t control the actions of humans, we are therefore forced to try to help prepare our animals for the inevitable.
This year we are trying to obtain calming treats to administer to our animals in the hopes that they will help them cope.
We are also trying to reinforce our kennels so that petrified dogs can’t squeeze themselves through small spaces when panicked & injure themselves.
Will you help support our message for this year’s celebrations by:
spreading the message of being mindful & compassionate about our pets & wildlife
Reminding others of the legislation regarding the use of fireworks & other explosives within residential areas- it is illegal
Consider noiseless fireworks
Ensure your pets & homes are secured & prepared for this day
Donate to help us purchase hundreds of calming treats for our animals
Please have compassion for our animals & wildlife & help prevent unnecessary suffering for this Divali.
Take care of others & nature takes care of you
